KTC Teacher English Language Specialist

  • Specialist education adviser position to contribute to long term education development in Kiribati
  • Short term, periodic inputs (up to 125 input days in 2016 and also in 2017).
  • Inputs based in Tarawa, Kiribati

The Program

On behalf of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Coffey is managing the delivery of a package of support and technical assistance (Kiribati Education Facility), to the Kiribati Ministry of Education (MoE) as part of the Kiribati Education Improvement Program (KEIP). We work with participating donors, including DFAT, UNICEF and UNESCO, to support the MoE in implementing a comprehensive reform program focused on ensuring all children in Kiribati have access to quality schooling.

KEIP Phase III (2016-2019) is planned to commence in April 2016 and will focus on the consolidation of the reforms already undertaken in 2010-15. Phase III will extend the curriculum and teaching and learning reforms from primary years into the Junior Secondary system.

The Position

The KTC Teacher English Language Specialist will assist the MoE to implement its language-in-education policy for enhanced teacher capability for the transition to English in Grades 4-5 and to strengthen students’ communication skills in English. The adviser will work with MoE and Kiribati Teachers College leadership in the development of a strategic plan for English language proficiency and use by Kiribati’s teacher workforce and will work with the Curriculum Development and Resources Centre (CDRC) to strengthen existing teacher guides and curricular materials from Grade 4-6.

The Person

Are you an education professional with expertise in bilingual teaching and learning strategies, as well as in the use of TESOL?

The ideal candidate will be tertiary qualified in Education with demonstrated experience as a language educator, ideally in the basic education sector and in designing programs and strategies for improved language proficiency for teachers and students at the education system level. Experience also in strengthening school curriculum and assessment materials that support the transition of instruction into English is required for success. Previous experience working in the Pacific if highly desirable as is knowledge of international development agreements including the aid effectiveness agenda.
