The Program
BEQUAL directly supports the education priorities of the Government of Lao PDR described in the MoES 8th Education Sector Development Plan and is consistent with the strategic directions set out in Australia’s Education Delivery Strategy 2013-2018. BEQUAL is designed to be rolled out over ten years, in three phases. The first phase, from 2015–2020 is working in the most educationally disadvantaged districts, to increase participation of disadvantaged children, improve learning environments and teacher quality. BEQUAL’s key activities through to August 2020 will focus on assisting the MoES with the development and implementation of the national new curriculum for grades 1–5. This will include development of an aligned pre-service curriculum, teacher development and intensified support in targeted districts with a focus on improving learning outcomes for girls and boys from disadvantaged groups. In addition, BEQUAL will assist MoES with general support for the roll out of the national curriculum for Grades 1 and 2 (up to August 2020) across all 18 provinces.
The Position
The TTC PDP Science Specialist will work in partnership with the Department of Teacher Education (DTE) to support knowledge and skills development for TTC Lecturers.
As part of a team, the TTC PDP Science Specialist will support in-service training for TTC Science lecturers and the Department of Teacher Education (DTE):
Supporting Science Key Trainers from the TTCs to provide in-service training to TTC lecturers in preparation for implementation of the new pre-service curriculum in all TTCs.
Preparing and supporting delivery of a training package for TTC PDP Trainer of Trainers (TOT) Workshops (three workshops planned in January/February 2019, August 2019 and January/February 2020).
This will include preparing training packages for lecturers, skills development for Key Trainers and monitoring progress of this professional development package and adapting as necessary. Other key responsibilities will include:
- Preparation and delivery of professional development workshops with a focus on primary Science.
- Mentor Science Key Trainers to take over the role of professional development within their respective TTC’s.
The Person
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Master’s in Education with demonstrated experience in pre-service teacher education for primary teachers. The Specialist will have experience in developing Science materials for primary teacher trainers and/or primary teacher trainees as well as demonstrated experience in conducting workshops or related professional development activities for Science teacher educators in a development context. The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with line departments in Ministry of Education and have experience in mentoring education counterparts in a low resource setting.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high level of initiative and the capacity to work as part of a team is essential. Along with effective communication skills you will also have excellent written skills in English. Sound knowledge of issues of inclusion related to gender, ethnicity and disability as well as previous experience in a Southeast Asian context is preferred.
