The Australian Government’s Fiji Program Support Facility announces:
Assessment and Examinations Adviser
- Specialist adviser opportunity to support development of the education sector in Tuvalu
- Short term adviser, initial contract of 12 months with up to 40 input days. Likely extension of a further two years with up to 40 input days per year.
- Inputs based in Funafuti, Tuvalu, with the possibility of some travel to the outer islands
The Program
The Australian Government has established the Fiji Program Support Facility (the Facility) to support and implement Australian Government assistance in sectors including education, health, CSO engagement, emergency preparedness and response and Australia Awards programs in Fiji. The Facility also supports the Australia Awards and education programs in Tuvalu.
Support to education in Tuvalu is an important component of the Facility. The focus of the support is on improved quality of learning for children, particularly in literacy and numeracy in years 1-4; increased access to Technical Vocational Skills Development (TVSD) as the second pathway to education; and improved functioning of the education system.
The Position
The Assessment and Examinations Adviser will work collaboratively with Ministry of Education Youth and Sports (MEYS) colleagues in Tuvalu, including the Senior Education Officer (SEO) for Assessment and Examinations and will provide technical advice and support to consolidate the work done in establishing the Assessment and Examinations Unit. Other key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the development of assessment and examinations policy and systems;
- Working with the SEO for ICT to incorporate assessment and examinations data in the Tuvalu Education Management Information System (TEMIS) and the effective management of data;
- Providing mentoring and training to Assessment and Examinations Unit personnel in writing valid and reliable test and examination items and in using results of examinations data analysis to support school improvement planning; and
- Supporting the review of current school examination processes and procedures.
The Person
The ideal candidate will be post-graduate qualified in assessment and evaluation of student performance and will demonstrate considerable experience working with or developing assessment policy for primary and secondary education, ideally in the Pacific or another developing country context. Hands-on experience in constructing and moderating school examinations will be required, as well as previous experience working with electronic databases, preferably EMIS.
Candidates will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills and ability to engage with a range of stakeholders including senior government officials, teachers and principals. A strong ability to coach and mentor colleagues from different social or cultural backgrounds is required for success.
