Opening: Policy Advocacy Volunteer
Asylum Access is an innovative non-profit founded to make refugee rights a reality in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We help refugees assert their fundamental rights using four integrated tools; individualized legal counsel and/or representation, community legal empowerment, policy advocacy and strategic litigation. With offices in Ecuador, Mexico, Thailand, Tanzania and Malaysia, we provide direct legal assistance reaching over 10,000 refugees per year.
Asylum Access Thailand (AAT) is looking for a Policy Advocacy Volunteer based in their Bangkok Office.
Starting date: as soon as possible
Duration: 3-4 months (with the possibility that following this the role will transition to a paid position subject to performance and budget)
Stipend: A limited monthly stipend will contribute to daily costs
Responsibilities
- Assisting AAT’s Country Director on policy advocacy priorities according to AAT’s annual plan.
- To cultivate and maintain relationships with the Thai government, NGOs and other key Thai stakeholders, specifically with regard to the refugee screening mechanism and issues relating to alternatives to detention.
- Attend networking meetings and provide up to date information and reports to the Country Director and management team.
- To develop and implement projects aimed at raising awareness and understanding of refugee issues among the Thai population.
- Maintaining AAT’s relationship management system database
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Bachelor degree in Human Rights, Social Development, Political Science, Law or a related field.
- An interest in and awareness of refugee issues, human rights, or international affairs.
- Experience and knowledge of advocacy tools and previous involvement in advocacy projects
- An easy going personality with an understanding of the importance of working as part of a team and the ability to carefully follow the direction of AAT management.
- A positive and outgoing attitude with ability to work well in a diverse and multicultural background.
- Basic working knowledge of Gmail, Google Drive, MS Office and related tools (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
- Knowledge of Thai and English are required, both speaking and writing
