Primary Education Specialist - Literacy
- Initial 4 months input (120 days) starting July 2017
- Follow-up inputs of 270 days over the next 2 years
- Based in Vientiane
The Program
The goal of BEQUAL is to ensure all girls and boys, especially those experiencing disadvantage, complete a quality basic education to achieve literacy, numeracy and other life skills. The program will address education policy, planning and coordination, increased child participation in and access to basic education, teacher education and improved school infrastructure.
The Position
The Primary Education Specialist - Literacy will have responsibility for managing and supporting activities under Key Result Area 4, Teaching and Learning Resources, supporting the MOES to develop a more efficient and decentralised system for the acquisition and procurement of renewed teaching and learning resources that are more gender sensitive and inclusive of disadvantaged groups. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with the Lao Language curriculum writers to write and develop curriculum and teaching and learning materials for the primary grades 1-5 that reflect a learner centred approach.
- Collaborating with curriculum writers to integrate learning Lao as a second language as a learning approach across all teaching and learning materials in the primary curriculum.
- Writing a teacher guide, ‘Teaching Lao to Non-Mother Tongue Speakers in Primary Schools in Laos’ that provides advice to primary teachers, trainee teachers and teacher educators and aligns with the revised primary curriculum.
- Collaborating with Department of Teacher Education (DTE) and KRA 3: Teacher Education and Support, to ensure that the primary curriculum and materials are included in in-service and pre-service teacher training.
The Person
The ideal candidate will have a post-graduate qualification in education in early year’s education or a post- graduate qualification in second language learning, with experience working in primary education in a developing country context. The specialist will have experience teaching in the early years combined with developing language learning curriculum for pre-primary and/or primary students. They will have considerable experience writing textbooks and teacher guides for language learning in primary education. An understanding of children’s language development, including how children acquire early literacy is required for success.
Lao Language competency (desirable)
