Fiji: Maternal and Newborn Health Adviser

The Program

The Australian Government has established the Fiji Program Support Facility (the Facility) to implement its education, health and scholarship aid programs in Fiji and its scholarship program in Tuvalu. The Facility will also support the delivery of Australia’s emergency response efforts following natural disasters, and governance sector support when requested by the Fiji Government.

Support to Fiji’s health sector is a key component of the Facility. The focus of the support is on strengthening health service delivery as well as health systems strengthening, in particular financial planning, policy and management.

Coffey, through the Facility, is seeking applications for a key technical adviser, Maternal and Newborn Health Adviser to contribute to program goals.

The Position

The Maternal and Newborn Health Adviser will work with senior clinicians and public health managers within the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, to assess the current approach to service delivery and collaboratively develop a package of care for mothers and newborns that can be provided safely and effectively at sub-divisional hospitals, with the goal of improved access, patient safety, efficiency and quality care. The Adviser will support the implementation of the proposed package of service delivery by identifying pilot sites and will complete an assessment of the resources, governance and monitoring required for the pilots and further roll out of the model.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have an advanced university degree (Masters level) in medicine or public health from a recognised university, with at least 5 five years’ experience in clinical and public health in the area of maternal, newborn and child health. This will be combined with experience in program development and management in clinical service design and delivery in a developing country context. We are seeking candidates with proven experience with practical and impactful gender equality and social inclusion approaches, as well as an excellent ability to work effectively and engage with multiple stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Previous experience in the Pacific or small island countries is highly desirable and familiarity with Fijian government functions and systems would be an advantage.

This position is classified Category C, Level 3 (long term) under the DFAT Adviser Remuneration Framework and is for a period of 6 months.
